Our Approach
Our approach is based on the premise that pain and dysfunction occur as a result of impaired patterns of movement. Attention is given to global assessment with the belief that there are no local injuries in the body. Treatment emphasis is placed upon identifying the root cause of the dysfunction rather than just the symptoms you might be feeling and administering effective, non-invasive interventions towards achieving normal, efficient, and strain-free, pain-free movement.
More Than Pain Relief
Are you interested in more than just getting out of pain? Are you interested in actually enhancing your ability to do the things you most enjoy?
Pain reduction is just a byproduct of utilizing the services we offer at The Renkens Center. Our techniques will not only help you recover from pain quickly, but can also help to prevent injuries in the first place. Remember, with dysfunction pain is oftentimes the last thing to show up. This means that the body has already been compensating for some time and has finally crossed the threshold. Pain is simply your body’s signal call for help!

Methods We Use
Methods we use to eliminate pain and successfully restore proper function:

ART – Active Release Technique
ART is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves – collectively referred to as soft tissue.
Shoulder pain, knee problems, back pain, hip pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART.
These conditions all have one important thing in common – they are often a result of overused muscles. When muscles (and other soft tissues) are overused it causes your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become entrapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain.
The goal of ART is to restore optimal texture, motion, and function of the soft tissue and to release any entrapped nerves or blood vessels. This is accomplished through the removal of adhesions or fibrosis in the soft tissue via the application of specific protocols. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient.
ART has proven itself to be a fast, effective, and non-invasive way to heal a wide range of soft tissue injuries, correct injury-based mobility problems, and to get people moving again without pain.

MAT – Muscle Activation Technique
Whether it be from overuse, trauma, or biochemical imbalances, muscles are prone to neuromuscular inhibition. Neuromuscular inhibition is a technical way of saying that the communication between your brain and muscles has become dysfunctional similar to that of loose wires in a light switch. That is, muscles shut down.
Within a short time of muscles functioning improperly, other muscles are forced to compensate. These compensations produce tightness, restricted range of motion, altered joint alignment, and dysfunction. The pain and discomfort that results from muscle inhibition and compensation can be eliminated and even prevented by getting your muscles to function properly. This is how MAT is so effective.
Range of motion evaluations and comprehensive muscle testing help to identify muscle imbalances and poor neurological connections. State-of-the-art techniques and treatments are used to restore proper neural connections, correct muscle imbalances, and get rid of compensations and pain. Specific, individualized exercises are then provided to help you reinforce and maintain these corrections.
Proper treatment approaches provide the ability for the body to function with efficiency and without pain and discomfort – the way it was designed to.

Low Level Laser Therapy
One of the most effective treatment tools we use is the therapeutic medical low level laser. The Apollo laser is designed to correct and heal soft tissue dysfunction and ailments with the penetration of billions of photons of visible and invisible laser light deep into tissue structures. Tissues naturally contain protein strands called chromophones and cytochromes located in the cell’s mitochondria which have a unique ability to absorb laser light energy and transform it into chemical energy for the cell to use. This chemical energy is immediately utilized by the tissue on a cellular level to significantly accelerate the healing process and reduce pain in the body naturally.
Low level laser therapy is sometimes called cold laser therapy because no heat is generated. The laser we use can be safely used anywhere on the body to create predictable outcomes. The Apollo Laser is FDA approved. The laser technology has been used for over 30 years in Europe, Asia, and Canada with great success. Low level laser therapy was made available in the United States after 12 years of study and research.

KinesioTaping
There is a new treatment available for the aches and pains of daily living. Lance Armstrong, the seven-time winner of the Tour de France, has called it his “miracle tape”! Olympic athletes from around the world have used KinesioTape to help them perform. Developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase nearly 25 years ago in Japan, KinesioTaping has become the gold standard for therapeutic rehabilitative taping. A gentle yet effective approach to therapy, the KT method involves taping over and around muscles in order to assist and give support or to prevent over-contraction of muscles. KT is suitable for patients of every age or condition. It is extremely versatile in its ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, promote lymphatic flow, reduce pain, promote injury resolution, and enhance performance. Correctional techniques include mechanical, lymphatic, ligament / tendon, fascia, space, and functional. In addition, the tape is water-resistant and can be worn for several days, allowing the individual to receive around the clock therapeutic benefits.

Exercise – Corrective and Performance Enhancement
Our bodies were programmed to move. Movement is inherently good for us as it helps organize the body. The Renkens Center promotes exercise – both corrective and performance based – to best facilitate the healing process, optimize overall health, and maximize performance. For those overcoming injury and on their way towards recovery, we feel there is no better way to foster patient participation and self-treatment than through exercise. Specific exercises are demonstrated to promote productive adaptation and better function. For those seeking sport-specific or performance training, The Renkens Center is equipped and ready to help you reach your goals.
